Why No Transfers? – Italian Football News 20 Jan 22

Despite some of the biggest names in football months away from the end of their contracts, no major transfer moves have taken place in the three weeks of the transfer window.

Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Thursday January 20th, our 147th daily show in a row!

Some of the biggest names in world football are coming to the end of their contracts in the summer, so this transfer window is their clubs’ last chance to scrape a lower transfer fee for them or risk seeing them go for nothing in a few months.

With names such as Mbappe, Fati, Pogba and Rudiger in that position, we expected January to see some big name moves but so far, absolutely nothing.

Only Lorenzo Insigne, who turned down a contract on reduced terms to stay at Napoli, has sealed a move for the end of the season to Toronto FC and he may be joined by current teammate Dries Mertens. Players like Mauro Icardi, Erling Haaland and Dusan Vlahovic are not out of contract but are very much known to be looking for moves, yet nothing even on those fronts.

So what has to happen in order to get things moving? It could all hinge on just one big transfer completing before everything else can fall into place.

For example, Pogba leaving United would free up a big wage earner, allowing someone like Icardi or Haaland to come in. Just a hypothetical but either way, the last day of the transfer is either going to be spectacular or we are heading for a huge nothing burger!

In the Coppa Italia, Sassuolo knocked Cagliari out 1-0 thanks to a goal by Harroui and Inter squeezed past Empoli 3-2 after extra time.
