Super Inter! – Italian Football News 13 Jan 22

Champions win first silverware of the season, beating Juventus 2-1 in the Super Coppa.

Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Thursday January 13th, our 140th daily show in a row!

An Alexis Sanchez goal in injury time at the end of extra time gave Scudetto winners Inter Milan the first silverware of the season as they beat Juventus 2-1.

The trophy is the equivalent of England’s Community Shield, with the reigning league champions taking on the holders of the Cup competition.

Both bosses named strong squads, Juventus missing some key players through injury and COVID reasons, including keeper Szcecesny.

Inter started brightest but it was Juve who opened the scoring when a Morata cross took a deflection of an Inter defender, looping up over Stefan de Vrij for Weston McKennie to score with a header.

The lead lasted only 10 minutes when Sunday’s hero Mattia De Sciglio dallied over clearing the ball, allowing Dzeko to sneak in front of him in his own box and draw the foul. The pen was given and Martinez tucked it away.

Both sides had good chances to win it but a mixture of poor finishing and great goalkeeping saw the game into extra time. With the game heading to penalties, the Juve bench were screaming at their players to commit a foul so that sub Leonardo Bonucci could come on to take a penalty in the shootout. Somewhat distracted, Juve failed to clear a Dimarco cross and Sanchez toe-poked the ball in to win it for Inter.

In the night’s Coppa Italia game, Atalanta easily beat Venezia 2-0 to rech the quarter finals. Tonight sees Fiorentina at Napoli and Milan at home to Genoa.
