RIP Gianluca Vialli

Hello everyone, No usual intro today and we have just one story.

Yesterday, Italian football lost one of its most popular brothers.

The man everybody knew simply as ‘Luca’, Gianluca Vialli, passed away as pancreatic cancer took its second hold on him and finally won the battle.

Luca was just 58 years old.

As a player, Luca was universally loved. One of those players who you just wished played for your team. A total professional, putting his physical condition above everything else, he had 8 magnificent years at Sampdoria where he helped form his memorable partnership with Roberto Mancini, known together as “I Gemelli del Gol” – The Goal Twins.

He left Samp for Juventus in 1992 for a world record fee, winning a Scudetto and a Champions League before joining the Russian revolution at Chelsea where he won three trophies as a player, player-manager and manager.

His brotherhood with Mancini started when they were kids and would continue for the rest of his life.

When Mancio was made national coach, he immediately installed Vialli as team coordinator, a role he stepped away from a month ago in order to focus on his recovery.

Perhaps the most memorable images of the Goal Twins will be from the Summer of 2021, when their Azzurri gave us a memorable Euros campaign, culminating in a penalty shootout win against England at Wembley.

Instead of coming home, it came to Rome.

That’s how I will remember Luca. His beaming smile conveying an immense personal pride in his own achievement but even stronger than that was his joy for Mancini.

Thanks for everything, Luca.

Here are this weekend’s matches in Serie A, where each match will observe a minutes’s silence:
