Napoli Beaten! – Italian Football News 05 Jan 23

Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Thursday January 5th!

It was all systems Go yesterday when Serie A returned with every team in action.

We had a great game between Cremonese and Juventus, where both teams fought it out for 90 minutes in a game which saw the long-awaited return of Federico Chiesa after months out with a cruciate ligament injury.

Honours were even in the first half, Cremonese having a header looped just off the line but the second half was played like injury time of a cup tie – end to end, Cremonese hitting the post, Chiesa going close and counter attacks from both teams.

It looked like Cremoese would gain a precious point but a minute into injury time, Arkadiusz Milik saw things differently and his 20-yard free kick curled beyond the keeper and just inside the post for the win.

Earlier, Roma scored an early penalty and ground out a 1-0 win at home to Bologna, the most notable incident being a defensive goalline header from Tammy Abraham in the dying seconds preserving the points for Roma.

The main event, though, was at San Siro where a cagey game was settled when di Marco’s pinpoint cross was met 6 yards out by Edin Dzeko while Rrahmani switched off and allowed his man too much space. After two wonder saves in the first half, there was nothing Meret could do in the Napoli goal.

Napoli looked a touch off the pace but Inter’s defending was majestic.

Milan’s earlier win put them 3 points closer to Napoli and Atalanta came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 away to Spezia. 3 vital points for Sampdoria who won 2-1 at Sassuolo, draws between Fiorentina and Monza as well as Udinese and Empoli along with a surprise defeat for Lazio away to Lecce rounded off an eventful day!

The possible future of the Italy national team shone in England, though, where both Wilfried Gnonto and Riccardo Scamacca found their scoring boots with a goal each in the Premier League draw between Leeds and West Ham.

We have another full round of games this weekend, stretching from Saturday to Monday as Serie A gets back in full swing.
