Juventus were unceremoniously dumped out of the Champions League last night after a 3-0 defeat at home to Villareal saw them go down 4-1 on aggregate.

It’s a result that some will find quite shocking but Max Allegri was defiant in his post match presser. When asked if this season, he struggled to contain his frustration at the question.

“If you have intellectual dishonesty, you read it in a way, but the reality is different. Do you understand?” He said

“I knew that people would talk about a failure in case of elimination, but that’s intellectual dishonesty. I know the value of team. We’ve been using the same players for two months, we are in the race for the top four and the Coppa Italia. I have nothing to reproach the guys. They are doing extraordinary things.”

Dusan Vlahovic rattled the bar mid way through the first half but the game unraveled for Juve in the 78th minute when Villareal were awarded a penalty after a VAR check, which was put away by Gerard Moreno. Within 14 minutes, Juve had conceded two more and were out of Europe.

Among those concerned by Juve’s exit will be their rivals for the title as Juventus are now not going to be hampered by additional games in the Champions League. They are still in the Coppa Italia but can focus more on their relentless pursuit of the Scudetto.

The result means that Italy’s only remaining representatives in Europe are Roma, who play Vitesse tonight in the UEFA Conference League – a game that Jose Mourinho says is his only focus despite the Rome derby coming up on Sunday.
