Serie A needed one of the frontrunners to administer a solid thrashing to send a sign to the other teams at the top.

Inter just needed to score a goal after going without one for three matches.

Last night, both needs were satisfied with a tremendous 5-0 beating of lowly Salernitana at San Siro. 5 much-needed goals , including a hattrick for out of form Lautaro Martinez and a brace for Edin Dzeko.

It could all have been so different though when, after 3 minutes, Milan Djuric was put through by an excellent ball from Kastanos. He slipped it to Simone Verdi who wasted the chance to go 1-0 up with an awful shot over the bar.

Martinez signalled his intent when he smashed a shot against the bar and then on 22 minutes, he scored his and Inter’s first goal.

Barella played him through behind the Salernitana defence and he finished with great confidence across Sepe.

18 minutes later, Martinez again and 2-0 Inter.

Barella again the creator, again slicing the visitors open and Martinez this time holding off the defender to finish with a crisp left foot shot.

10 minutes into the second half, Dzeko took a position out wide, His cross into the box found Martinez dashing across his marker to finish for his hat trick.

With his hat trick complete, Martinez passed the mantle to his strike partner.

New signing Robin Gosens squared for the Bosnian to score number four and on 69 minutes, Barella put Dumfries away down the right, his cross took out four defenders and found his number 9 in the box to round off the scoring.

A lot of things came together for Inter and it looks ominous for the final straight of the season.

The nature of the win has given Inter new found belief ahead of the Champions League game away to Liverpool, where they seek to overturn a 2-0 deficit.
