Inter Lions! – Italian Football News 13 Oct 22

Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Thursday, October 13th!

“At one point, I felt dizzy and thought I could see stars going around my head.”

The words of Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti after seeing his Napoli once again tear Ajax apart in the Champions League, making it 10 goals scored against the Dutch in 8 days and sealing qualification for the round of 16.

An exquisite Lozano header after 4 minutes got the ball rolling, followed by a magnificent, furious strike from Raspadori on 17.

A Kvaratskhelia penalty and an injury time smash and grab from Osimhen completed the Napoli scorers while Ajax’s goals came from Klaasen and Bergwijn.

Napoli sit at the top of Champions League Group A with 12 points from 4 games and a goal difference of plus 13.

Meanwhile, the petty posturing of former European greats Barcelona wound up the travelling Inter fans, who were banned from wearing any club colours in what must be a UEFA rule breach.

The Catalans were still furious after their defeat at San Siro last week, pointing to a disallowed goal and a denied penalty as proof of the injustice they suffered. A defeat would put them out of the Champions League after selling off their future to build a squad to compete again.

At half time, Barca were smiling. “We’re a goal up, their fans have no colours, aren’t we clever with our levers!”

Nah. A Barella goal on 50 minutes after horrendous defending by Pique made the scores level and a fine Martinez goal on 63 put Inter ahead and set up a fantastic final half hour.

A Lewandowski equaliser deflected past Onana off Bastoni to give Barca a lifeline. In injury time, Gosens, incredibly, put Inter ahead but Lewandowski again equalised with a great header.

Aslani wasted an amazing chance to make it 4-3 and even with the last touch of the game, Gosens headed against the post from a corner.

So, Inter are second, three points ahead of Barca and just a point from their remaining two games will see Barcelona out of the Champions League with tears streaming down their Mas Que Un Club, shirt-banning, Tiki Taka, crema catalana faces.

Tonight sees Roma away to Betis and Lazio at home to Sturm Graz in the Europa League while Fiorentina host Hearts in the Conference League.
