6th Best! – Italian Football News 7 Oct 22

Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Friday, October 7th!

Big news as Italy have leapfrogged Spain to become the 6th top ranked team….in the world!

That’s the whole world!

The Azzuri’s strong performances dueing the Nations league break, bringing wins against England and Hungary sent them into the final four of that tournament as well as inching them up the FIFA rankings.

Great news for Mancini and a huge boost for Italy’s chances in the 2022 World Cup. Oh that’s right, WE’RE NOT GOING!

A bad night for Jose’s Roma, who lost 2-1 at home to Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League. Things got worse for them when Nicolò Zaniolo was given a straight red for lashing out at a Betis defender in injury time.

Lazio were held 0-0 by Sturm Graz in Austria, despite their hosts going down to 10 men for the last 10 minutes. Immobile was back and thought he broke the deadlock with 15 to go but his goal was chalked off by VAR for a marginal offside.

Stars of the night for Italy in Europe last night were Fiorentina, who dominated Hearts in Edinburgh for a 3-0 win in their Conference League game.

Finally, Italian football mourns the passing of fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone, who died yesterday with Leukaemia.

His work at Juventus at the start of the 21st century brought massive success to Lippi’s side. He worked again with Lippi at the 2006 World Cup – WHICH ITALY WON! – and most recently worked under Conte at Spurs right up to his death.

Here are this weekend’s fixtures in Serie A!
